GRIEF IS MUNDANE (PILLOWS FOR THE DEAD)

In this needlepoint pillow, brown yarns resonate and vibrate against each other to create rows of stripes. This pillow is made of thousands of individual stitches, each one visible because the pillow is made from a variegated yarn. The four ply yarn is split into two strands of two ply. The two ply strand is combined with an un-split four ply strand to create a six ply yarn with a color ratio of 4:2. The variegation of the two yarns compete with one another in each stitch, drawing attention to the unit rather than the whole. The emphasis of the repetition draws the viewer’s attention to the timeline of the making process. This artwork was made over the course of two years and is the beginning of a series of needlepoint pillows, each an expression of mourning. By following a system into oblivion, the artist finds meditation in madness and mundanity in mourning.
