IN MEMORIAM
All photographs are images of things which no longer exist. While time marches on, photographs do not. In this sense, every photograph is an image of something which has already died.
In this series, Goetz creates obituary photographs. These photographs are presented in their mid-way point—they will only be finished once the subjects are dead and the photographs are printed in the Obituary Section of a newspaper. The subjects will be dead, but in the photographs, they are still alive. The soft edges and subtle blur allude to this limbo, as if the photographs themselves are confused. Through these photographs, the subjects will forever be alive, but also, they will forever be dead.
These photographs accompany Goetz’s BFA thesis, in which he develops the concepts that inform these images. Goetz’s thesis: here.
