TZIMTZUM

According to Jewish mystics, Tzimtzum is the process where an infinite God destroys part of the self to make room for our universe. The first act of creation was also an act of destruction.

In this series, Goetz uses chemicals and abrasives to create dramatic patinas on the surface of a single steel plate. Goetz creates the surface of the plate and then documents the result of his transformations. After photographing the plate, he erases the previous creation by introducing new chemicals. Goetz’s images take on the language of celestial bodies or unknown worlds—but all born from a system of decay.
